As the days grow longer and the nights turn warmer, it’s time to say goodbye to winter decor and welcome the vibrant colors of spring and summer. And what better way to start than by refreshing your front door? A cheerful sunflower wreath is the perfect way to add a sunny pop of color that greets your guests with a warm, inviting touch.
This sunflower was one of the very first crafts I did as an adult that really got me so interested into crafts and seeing what I could create myself. It was so simple and people absolutely loved it. I actually sold these in my first Etsy shop as well. Im excited to share this easy DIY wreath with you and hope it inspires you to create something you love.
In this tutorial, I’ll guide you step-by-step to create a stunning deco mesh sunflower wreath. It’s an easy and fun project that will make your door the star of the neighborhood. Let’s dive in!
Materials You’ll Need:
- Deco mesh in yellow (for petals)
- Deco mesh in green (for leaves)
- A wire wreath frame (14 inches is a great size)
- Pipe cleaners (in yellow or green, cut in half)
- Faux burlap or brown or black deco mesh (for the center)
- Scissors or a rotary cutter
- Ruler or cutting mat
- Hot glue gun (optional, for added security)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prep Your Wreath Frame
Start by attaching pipe cleaners to the wire frame. Twist them securely onto each crossbar section of the frame. This will create the base for attaching your deco mesh.
2. Cut Your Deco Mesh
- Yellow Mesh (Petals): Cut the yellow deco mesh into 10-inch strips. Aim for about 30–40 pieces depending on how full you want the wreath. SIDE NOTE: You can purchase 10-inch rolls of deco mesh if that’s your preference, but keep in mind that you’ll need to buy more than one roll to have enough for a full sunflower. When creating your wreath, it’s important not to skimp on the petals—sparse petals can leave your sunflower looking uneven and less vibrant. If you opt for longer rolls of mesh, cutting them into 10-inch sections is a breeze with a paper cutter that includes a 10-inch square guide. Simply lay the mesh on the board, line it up, and slice away. For a single sunflower wreath, I found that one entire roll of yellow mesh was just the right amount to create a lush, full look.
- Green Mesh (Leaves): Cut the green deco mesh into 12-inch strips. You’ll need about 6–10 pieces for the leaves. Make sure they are larger than your sunflower petals so they will peak out from behind. The number you will use is up to you and how full you make your flower.
3. Create Petals
- Take a yellow mesh strip and pinch it in the center, forming a bow shape.
- Fold the pinched center slightly to create a petal effect.
- Secure the pinched end into one of the pipe cleaners on the wreath frame, twisting it tightly to hold the petal in place.
Repeat this process around the wreath, ensuring the petals overlap slightly to give the wreath a full, lush appearance. Add about 10-12 even spaced petals on the outer ring of your wreath frame. Then in between the first row you will add the second row of petals on the 2nd wire of the wreath frame. Repeat for the 3rd wire of your frame. When you are done, add in any extra petals to fill in any gaps.
4. Add Leaves
- Using the green deco mesh, fold each strip in half lengthwise to create a leaf shape.
- Secure the leaves to the outermost ring of the wreath frame, spacing them evenly between the petals.
5. Create the Sunflower Center
- For the center, take the burlap or brown or black mesh and roll it into a tight spiral.
- Secure the base of the spiral with a pipe cleaner or hot glue.
- Attach the finished spiral to the center of the wreath frame using pipe cleaners or glue, ensuring it’s tightly secured. You may find it easier to attach it to a small cardboard circle first and then put a few holes in the cardboard and run pipe cleaners thru the holes to attach it to the center of your wreath frame.
6. Fluff and Adjust
Once all the petals and leaves are attached, fluff and shape them to give the wreath a natural, full look. Adjust the placement of any pieces as needed.
